Singing for their supper !
The Rotary Club of Maldon is moving into new fund raising territory and holding a Grand Cabaret at Maldon Town Hall, to raise funds for the Club, Rotary charities and , most importantly , for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. The evening will include songs from everybodies’ favourite West End and Broadway musicals, and the tickets, priced at £15 each, include a fish and chip supper during the interval ( other food options are available) .
David Rayner, the organiser of the event for Maldon Rotary Club explained that it will feature leading singers from Southampton Operatic Society and Colchester. ‘ You might think it strange that people will journey to Maldon from Southampton to sing’, commented David, ‘ but until I moved to Maldon 2 years ago I was a Director for, and a principal singer with, the Southampton group. We had a highly successful cabaret group who, over about 8 years, raised over £30,000 for charity by doing just this sort of event – especially working with Save the Children and Rotary clubs in Hampshire. I know that this will be a really fun evening, with plenty of opportunity for audience participation and some top quality performances . ‘ The performers from Southampton will be joined by someone who has won ‘ Colchester’s Got Talent ‘ in addition to being the Conservative candidate for Colchester at the General Election and Gemma Rawlinson who is very well known as a singer around north Essex. Some of the shows that will be included in the programme will be:- Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Avenue Q, Brigadoon, Kismet, Carousel and even Spamalot – though David promises they will not be singing ‘ Always look on the bright side of life ‘ ! ‘ We will even be including songs to mark the centenary of the start of World War 1, a superb example from Grand Opera and a little Gilbert and Sullivan. There will be plenty of comedy numbers to keep everyone smiling. I’ll be very disappointed if the audience doesn’t leave humming their favourite tunes ‘, concluded David. Brian Farrington , President of Maldon Rotary Club, told us, ‘ we are all looking forward to a great night out and to being right royally entertained by some top class performers. Best of all, we will be raising significant amounts for the charities involved ‘. Lauren Levy from Helen Rollason Cancer said ‘ we were thrilled to learn that Maldon Rotary Club wanted to support us – and with such a great event. We do hope that our supporters will be out in force on 15th March !’
Tickets for the Grand Cabaret are selling fast and if you want to book , you should contact either Maldon Tourist Information Office ( 01621 856503) or call 01621 852595 or contact Helen Rollason Cancer Charity.
